How to properly care for candles: Tips for longer and safe burning
How to properly care for candles so that they last as long as possible
Candles can add a cozy atmosphere to your home, but to enjoy them for as long as possible and ensure they burn safely, it's important to take proper care of them. We have prepared several tips for you on how to take care of candles and get the maximum experience from them.
1. The first ignition is key
When you light the candle for the first time, let it burn long enough for the wax to melt to the edges of the container. This will prevent the creation of so-called "tunnel", when the candle melts only in the middle and leaves wax on the walls. As a general rule, a candle should burn for about one hour for every centimeter of its diameter.
2. Trim the wick regularly
Trimming the wick is one of the most important parts of candle care. Before each lighting, trim the wick to a length of approx. 0.5 cm. A long wick can cause too large a flame, smoking and rapid burning of the wax. A short wick ensures a stable flame and longer candle life.
3. Extinguish the candle correctly
Avoid blowing the candle when you want to put it out. Blowing may create smoke and soot. Instead, use a fire extinguisher or dip the wick into melted wax and immediately straighten it again. This extinguishing method ensures a clean burn and reduces the amount of soot.
4. Do not overburn the candle
Candles should burn for a maximum of 3-4 hours at a time. Prolonged burning can cause the container to overheat, which can affect the scent and shorten the life of the candle. If you plan to keep the candle burning for a long time, let it cool down after a few hours and then light it again.
5. Protect the candle from drafts
Place the candle in a place where it will not be exposed to drafts. Wind can cause the flame to flicker, increasing soot formation and uneven melting of the wax. Also, avoid direct sunlight, which can deform the candle or affect its scent.
6. Safe location
Always place candles on a flat, non-flammable surface and do not leave them burning unattended. Make sure the candle is out of the reach of children and pets. A burning candle should never be near flammable objects.
7. Proper storage
When not in use, store the candle in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Natural wax candles can be sensitive to temperature and humidity, which can affect their structure and appearance.
